See the Able, Not the Label

My brother, Brian who is my constant motivation and inspiration has Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS), a form of autism. I have witnessed first-hand how stigma can complicate efforts for those on the autism spectrum. Over the years I've worked to address this by serving as an advocate for those with autism.

What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder is categorized through a range of challenges through communication, behaviors, and social skills. Today 1 in 44 are diagnosed and 5.4 million American currently live with autism.

Although many people know autism exists but fail to understand the diagnosis, how to interact with those on the spectrum, or provide adequate accommodations. As an advocate who witnessed the lack of education and acceptance surrounding this disorder I have made it my mission for others to, See the Able, Not the Label. Through the platform of the Miss America Organization and as an ambassador for Stars for Autism, I have raised funds, launched awareness campaigns and developed programming that embeds a culture of understanding and compassion around autism. I’ve delivered this message across multiple media channels and in K-12 classrooms across the state.
